A Visual Guide To StrongLifts 5x5
It’s finished! This is my first infographic and actually first extensive project I’ve done using Adobe Illustrator so it was a great learning experience. This was produced for my Computer Illustration class. I loved working on it, and really it just makes me miss barbell training that much more. I made a lovely A3 print of it, and hopefully that is returned to me before I leave England so I can hang it up somewhere!
Also, about the program itself:
StrongLifts was the second barbell training routine I practiced last year (when I had access to a barbell), and I loved it. It’s a good routine if you like a fairly short yet high intensity workout, and I saw great improvements in a short period of time. It was also lots of fun for me, I like seeing progress every time I workout and the feeling of ‘leveling up’ so to speak. In addition, you can download the StrongLifts app, which is so well designed and really easy to use. So yeah, if you’re interested in checking out StrongLifts, click here!
And here I thought this was common sense!Who gets the best exercise gets the best sleep, too, a new study says
U.S. sleep experts say they’ve found a surprisingly strong link between exercise, the amount you get, and the intensity of it, and the restfulness of your night’s sleep, and risk of sleep disorders.

Breathing is something I have been more aware of since starting to lift with dumbbells instead of barbells. I guess the extra stabilization needed has sort of forced me to be more conscientious while I lift, or something along those lines. I found this article interesting.
What are your thoughts?
How do you breathe when lifting, or do you even notice your breath?

I’m giving this a go because MY FACE HURTS.
EDIT: Yoga poses confirmed as beneficial! My face feels better now! I did each pose in the middle of a round of sun salutation. However, I can feel one side of my nose plugging up again. This is how much gunk is running through my body right now! Time to do more yoga…
Should you fast before you exercise?
What’s the deal with all this talk of avoid food before workouts to burn more fat? Is this just another hyped-up trend, or is there some science to support fasting before a bout of exercise? Jennifer Sygo, our resident dietitian, investigates.

‘It’s totally freeing’: Interview with an Albertan all-men naked yoga instructor
It’s rare to see a yoga class dominated by men, but one Edmonton studio has managed to create an even more unusual sight – a yoga class dominated by naked men. Instructor Chris McBain teaches a weekly men-only naked yoga class at Shanti Yoga Studio in Edmonton. A lesson in stretching and self-acceptance, he said the class has become so popular, that the studio is looking to install a women-only course as well (a female teacher will instruct). Mr. McBain, who has been a yoga instructor since summer 2011, spoke with the Post’s Jen Gerson. (Photo: Ed Sarka)
Would you do naked yoga?
Strength training for sixty minutes, three times per week for six months can improve short and long term memory performance and attention as you age, according to a Brazilian study published by Medicine & Science in Sports and Exercise. The need to focus on technique/form when doing different lifts provides a cognitive challenge you may not get while doing repetitive exercises such as running.

“Rolling out of bed with throbbing muscles proves yesterday’s workout was a challenge. Congrats! But what does that ache mean for today’s session? While it’s tempting to suck it up and power through the pain for the sake of a good sweat, exercising sore muscles could undermine that workout and might even lead to injury.”

So I love that I can post from Fitocracy to Tumblr… but I can’t post to my secondary blogs! Fitocracy: something to work on for the future here?
Anyways, I swam in the morning. 12 laps actually felt pretty good even though I kept getting interrupted by my dad for technique corrections (what he knows about swimming, I’m not too sure… ). And went hiking/climbing/swimming with Anna and Mr. Canada out at Decew Falls! It was really dry, and the climbs weren’t as hard as I remember (stilll challenging enough though, haha), nor was the water as high as it usually is at the main waterfall. Either way, it was lots of fun. Anna I’m gonna miss you when I go awaaayy! :(

“We’ve all been guilty of skipping a workout… fine, several. Eventually, we make our way back to the gym, but it seems like the treadmills have gotten faster and the weights have gotten heavier. Is it just our guilty consciences psyching us out, or did we truly lose our hard-earned strength? Here, we explain just how long it takes to lose muscle mass and strength, and what to do stop it from happening.”
